Today's game between the ULM Warhawks and the Nicolls Colonels was nothing like Friday nights game. One day after scoring one run on 8 hits, the Warhawks exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits.
Dexter Fontenot starting the scoring when he laced a double in the first inning driving home 2 runs. He would score on a A.J. Siggers sacrifice fly giving ULM an early 3-0 lead. The Warhawks were not done in the first as Matt Laird would triple off the wall and score two more runs to make the score 5-0 after one half inning.
Colonel starter Justin Breaux would not last long as his day was done with two outs in the top of the second. Breaux gave up 6 runs on five hits, walked two and recored one strikeout on 46 pitches.
The Warhawks would make it 6-0 in the top of the second, when Fontenot scored Ben Soigner from third on an RBI single. Soinger reached third after singling and advancing to third on a Kyle Suire base hit. Suire was caught in a run down trying to advance to second.
The Colonels would get their first run with Anthony Wray doubled in the third and scored on a Keith Kulbeth single. ULM would get that run back in the top of the 5th when A.J. Siggers scored on a Matt Laird RBI single, making the score 7-1 Warhawks. Nicholls would come right back in the bottom of the fifth and put 2 runs on the board to cut the ULM lead to 4.
ULM would push the lead back out to six in the top half of the sixth. A single by Kyle Suire, followed by a walk by Dexter Fontenot would bring pitch hitter Kelvin York (hitting for Siggers). York ripped a double to left field scoring Suire and Fontenot to make the score 9-3 ULM.
ULM starter Ryan Kirk would give way to D.J. Fortenberry in the bottom of the sixth closing the book on his night. Kirk went 5 2/3 innings giving up 7 hits and four runs. Ryan walked one and struck out four. Fortenberry came in and was touched up for two runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning making the score 9-5 ULM.
ULM would tack on two more runs in the top of the eight when they loaded the bases. Walks by Suire, Fontenot, and Ryan McMillan set the table for Matt Collins. Collins singled to right field scoring Suire and Fontenot to end the ULM scoring as the Warhawks win it 11-6.
Ben Soinger pitched the final three innings and gave up ZERO hits to the Colonels. He walked two and struck out one. Kyle Suire and Matt Collins finished with three hits apiece while Laird and Fontenot each picked up two hits. ULM will go for the sweep tomorrow with a 1PM starting pitch time.
