ULM Takes Game One 7-6 Over FAU

Strong winds couldn't stop ULM shortstop Ben Soignier from hitting 2 home runs Friday night. Combine his 5 RBI night with the relief pitching of Derek Ward and the Warhawks took game one from FAU 7-6.

Two of the Sun Belt's most explosive teams looked to distance themselves from one another in the standings this weekend. The home team ULM Warhawks got the early jump on the visiting Owls from Florida Atlantic winning game one 7-6 at Warhawk Field last night.

The Owls would strike first in the bottom of the first when Jeremy Griffiths scored from second on DH Tom Hatcher's RBI single.

In the bottom half of the inning it didnt take the Warhawks long to get that run back. SS Ben Soignier would get the green light on 3-1 and send the offering over the left field wall for a solo home run. Following a Kyle Suire double, Dexter Fontenot would add one of his own scoring Suire and giving ULM a 2-1 lead.

ULM would add to that lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ben Soignier would continue his big night with a RBI single to right field scoring Jon Prevost. Second baseman Kyle Suire would score Matt Laird with another RBI single giving ULM a 4-1 lead.

FAU would close the gap at 4-3 scoring 2 runs in the top half of the 4th inning but the Warhawks would come right back. Ben Soignier clubbed his second home run of the night, a 3 run shot to left field giving ULM a 7-3 lead.

Derek Ward was called on in the 5th inning to relieve starter Jared Jennings. Jennings lasted 4 innings giving up 7 hits and five runs (3 earned), walking 2 and striking out 3. Ward, who leads ULM with 5 saves, went the final five innings only giving up three hits and one unearned run. Ward (2-0) picked up the win and lowered his team leading ERA to 1.80.

With the win ULM leapfrogs FAU for first place in the SBC, but will have to fight off the Owls Saturday(4PM CST) and Sunday(12PM CST) to keep their lead.
