Petal high school athletes Isaiah Newsome and Tavarese Maye committed to the ULM Warhawks this past weekend and Warhawk Nation caught up with head coach Steve Buckley to let ULM fans know about the talented athletes.
Coach Buckley on Tavarese Maye
"The upside on this kid is endless. Tavarese has that young athletic ability that college coaches look for. He runs a high 4.4 in the forty and has a 37" vertical jump, his best days are ahead of him".
We were a dominate running team and only threw the ball 15%. He still had 654 yards receiving for a 27 yard per catch average and scored 9 touchdowns. I think Tavarese can make it as a wide receiver or a defensive back at ULM. He is also the starting guard for our basketball team, just a smooth athlete. Tavarese is also an all A and B student and is fully qualified.
Coach Buckley on Isaiah Newsome
"In my opinion Isaiah was the best back in the state of Mississippi this year. He rushed for over 1,800 yards and missed two games with a high ankle sprain and still wasn't 100%. He is a 4.5 forty kid that's 5'11 and 200 pounds. Isaiah is a very very physical runner. He is the most physical runner I have ever coached here and in fact that includes my 9 years coaching at the college level".
Most people don't know that Isaiah finished 2nd in the state of Mississippi in power lifting and has a 37" vertical jump as well. He is a downhill runner and an excellent in pass protection".
One of Isaiah's biggest accomplishments has been in the classroom where he carries a 3.85 GPA and scored a 23 on his ACT.
