Return of the Champions!

The 2009 ULM Warhawk Champion Baseball team will begin its title defense this Friday night when they host the Warhawk Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 6PM when the Warhawks take on Northwestern State.

Yes, it is finally here! ULM Warhawk Baseball. The return of the 2008 Sunbelt Conference Champs! I, for one, can't wait until this Friday at 6 PM. The Warhawks welcome the following teams to the Warhawk Classic Tournament:

Northwestern State (28-28 Last Year Overall) Mississippi Valley State (18-26 Last Year Overall) Stephen F. Austin (25-29 Last Year Overall)

The action kicks off Friday night at 6 PM with ULM hosting Northwestern State. Last year, ULM and the Demons meet twice, each winning at the others stadium. ULM has an overall series lead with the Demons of 103-95. Expect senior Keith Christensen to get the start after being off for an entire year due to an injury.

Saturday the Warhawks will play in the night cap at 7 PM against Stephen F. Austin. The two teams played twice last year at the SFA campus with the Lumberjacks winning both games. ULM also holds a series lead again SFA of 33-16. Daniel McHenry looks like he might get the nod for the start under the lights!

The Warhawks will start the action on Sunday at 1 PM against Mississippi Valley State. The two teams have not meet since 2005, but ULM does have a series lead of 3-0 overall against Mississippi Valley State.

Matt Collins Looking For Big Season

With only 8 returning pitchers from last year, Coach Shake and staff hit the recruiting trails during the off season with a mission. The mission was to get some depth in the pitching rotation. Ten pitchers were added to the roster to help with that depth! RPI is very important in college baseball.

Baseball is a game of streaks and being HOT at the right time. Even with ULM winning the regular season Sunbelt Conference Title last year; it was still not enough for ULM to get a regional bid. That's when RPI comes to play. With a small pitching staff, such as last years, it was hard to win those midweek games. Now with 10 pitchers added, the depth is there. Winning those midweek games will greatly increase the chances of ULM getting a regional bid.

After all that being said, I hope that everyone is excited about ULM Baseball. The Hawk House in the Left Field Lounge will be in full effect. The atmosphere is out of this world. Invite your friends, family and coworkers out to Warhawk Field! The Club has proven to be winners and our community needs to continue the support!

For those in the stands, you will notice and hear a new tradition from the Left Field Lounge this year. Listen to the Left Field Lounge on Friday night and please feel free to participate. I will go into more depth next week about the new tradition.

See you at the ballpark!
