The ULM Warhawks jumped all over Mississippi Valley State (2-1) in the first inning scoring 5 runs on 5 hits and cruised to a big 15-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
ULM (2-1) won the Warhawk Classic with the victory and did so with a barrage of hits and runs. In the last 2 games ULM batters have torched opponent pitching to the tune of 39 runs on 35 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 home runs. When the Warhawks weren't hitting they were showing patience at the plate drawing 18 walks.
Cutting down on errors also helps as the Warhawks committed just one error in the last two games compared to 3 in the season opening loss to Northwestern State. Not only that but ULM pitchers cut down on the free bases. After putting 14 Demons on base via the walk or bean, the Warhawks issued just 6 more walks the last two games. The ULM pitching staff struck out 21 during the classic and finished with a sparkling team ERA of 3.21.
Shortstop Ben Soignier again had a huge day swinging the bat finishing with 4 more hits, 3 RBI's, and 2 more runs scored. First baseman Matt Collins took advantage of the left to right winds launching a 3-Run homer in the bottom of the 4th inning and finishing with three hits and 3 runs scored. Nick Wade, Kelvin York, and Matt Laird all finished with two hits apiece.
ULM will hit the road for a crucial mid week game against the Tulane Green Wave this Wednesday at 6PM. A win over the Wave would give the Warhawks a big boost in the RPI standings, and look good on the resume come tournament time.
