WKU Takes 8-5 Conference Win

Western Kentucky rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th and got one more in the 8th for a 8-5 conference opening victory Friday night over ULM.

ULM dropped a 8-5 Sun Belt conference opening game Friday night to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Warhawks took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 7th but couldn't hold on surrendering 3 runs to trail 7-5. WKU would add another run in the bottom of the 8th when Chad Cregar hit his 5th home run of the season.

ULM starter Keith Christensen went 4.2 innings but gave up 6 hits and 4 runs while walking 6 and striking out 3. Keith threw 103 pitches and faced 25 batters. Warhawk pitchers struggled on the mound with their control walking 9 Hilltoppers but only allowed 10 hits. Reliever Blake Jones took the loss for the Warhawks.

At the plate ULM was led by Junior Matt Laird who hit his first home run of the season, a 2 run shot in the top of the 6th that tied the game at 4.

The Warhawks would take the lead in the top of the 6th when Jordy Poche drove in Boomer Blanchard who had doubled earlier in the inning.

The lead was short lived as WKU would get 3 right back in the bottom of the 7th. A double, throwing error, hit batsman, fielders choice, and wild pitch would all play a role in the Hilltopper scoring.

Western Kentucky starter Matt Ridings lasted 5.2 innings getting tagged for 5 runs on 6 hits. He walked and struck out 5 throwing 99 pitches. Hilltopper relievers where able to calm the Warhawk bats down the rest of the way combining for 3.1 innings of 2 hit ball, one walk, and 5 strikeouts.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon with a 3PM first pitch start.
