Offensive Playmaker Follows Berry

The impact of Todd Berry is already being felt as the ULM Warhawks have just picked up commitment number nine, a former verbal commitment to UNLV.

It didn't take long for new head coach Todd Berry to make an impact on the 2010 ULM Warhawks recruiting class. Guyer high school wide receiver Luke Russell has switched his verbal commitment from UNLV to ULM and will follow Coach Berry to play for the Warhawks.

According to Russell it didn't matter which school Coach Berry wound up at, he was following him wherever he went.

"He is the reason I committed to UNLV", said Luke. Coach Berry is the only coach I want to play for. I told him that I committed to him a long time ago. I love what he has done offensively in his career".

The Denton Texas native was being heavily recruited before he committed to UNLV and still continues to be. "Before I committed I was talking to coaches from Duke, Arkansas, Kansas State, Houston, UTEP, SMU, TCU, NMSU and North Texas", said Russell. The wide receiver coach at Texas Tech was calling until Mike Leach was let go".

With great hands and blistering 4.48 speed, its easy to see why coaches were all over the 6'0 177 pounder. I camped at Texas A&M and they clocked me with a laser at 4.48. My pro agility was a 4.0 laser timed and 3.8 hand held".

Russell was a focal point for the Guyer football team ever since his sophomore season. "The coaches used me a lot in the wildcat formations because I get around the corner quickly and hit the seams".

Russell finished his career at Guyer with 139 receptions for 2,515 yards and 23 touchdowns. Remarkably he also rushed for 15 touchdowns and passed for another three.

"I'm not try to brag but I have a cannon for an arm", joked Russell. In Coach Berry's offense, Russell might get a chance to show that arm off on a trick play or two.

"I talked to a lot of football coaches in my career and throughout my recruitment and by far Todd Berry is the most intelligent of them all. When I heard the news that he was going to be the head coach at ULM, I called him and told him I wanted to follow him there. We have a bond and a trust that I don't have with any other coach".

Luke is academically qualified and will take his official visit to ULM on January 21st. Luke was recently named to the class 5-4A all district first team as a wide receiver.
