NEW ORLEANS – ULM junior right-hander Wil Browning has been named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week following a dominating performance at No. 17 Ole Miss on opening day, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Browning, who was making his ULM debut, retired all eight Ole Miss batters he faced to close out the game as the Warhawks defeated the Rebels 6-5 to hand them their first opening day loss since 1981. The junior college transfer from Holmes Community College was the only player from the state of Mississippi to play for either team in the game.
Pitching just one hour from his home town of Kosciusko, Miss., Browning struck out the first three batters he faced, including two in the seventh inning with the tying run on second base. The two batters he struck out in the seventh, David Phillips and Zach Wilson, were a combined 10-for-19 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in the series.
The victory gave the Warhawks their fourth road win over a ranked opponent in the last three seasons and second against a Southeastern Conference opponent (No. 5 Arkansas last season).
ULM travels to Nacogdoches, Texas, this weekend for the Stephen F. Austin Invitational. The Warhawks open play with Creighton on Friday at 11 a.m. before taking on Stephen F. Austin on Saturday and Northwestern State on Sunday.
