Louisiana 3A Quarterfinal Predictions, Part I

Last week, No. 9 Carroll ousted No. 25 Crowley High from the playoffs and the Bulldogs are on the road again this week vs. another Crowley school, undefeated No. 1 Notre Dame. Will Carroll reign again, or will the defending state champion Pioneers and offensive lineman Pete Petitjean (pictured) take another step towards defending their crown?

(Last week's Class 3A picks: 6-2; Overall, 97-22)

NO. 9 CARROLL (10-2) AT NO. 1 NOTRE DAME (12-0) -- Notre Dame is 40-1 over the past three years, with the sole loss coming to Lutcher in the 2008 finals.

Last week, the Pioneers defeated Independence, 28-7, as QB Waylon Young and RB Stu Cook each scored on a pair of touchdown runs. Cook and fellow back Logan Venable have each rushed for over 700 yards. Young has topped the 1,000-yard passing mark.

Carroll threw for 311 yards and ran for 237 more in a second-round shootout win (64-42) over Crowley. QB Jamond Collins did it all last Friday, running for 158 yards and 3 TDs, throwing for 220 yards and 3 more scores, and even catching 2 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown.

RB Tyree Hollins added 68 yards rushing and a TD on 14 carries for Carroll, which has the size and speed to compete with anyone. The Bulldogs have a victory over defending state champ Neville on their resume, but they also were surprised in two upset losses to Richwood and Franklin Parish.

Notre Dame has one of the best coaching staffs in the state - headed by the iconic Lewis Cook - and the Pioneers should have a sufficient game plan to move forward to next week's semifinals.

Notre Dame, 20-13
