Johnson Names a Leader

O.P. Walker cornerback Cortez Johnson has seen a spike in his recruitment over the past few weeks, and the talented senior from the West Bank of New Orleans is ready to name a favorite school.

"Oh yeah, I really liked Arizona," said Cortez Johnson following his official visit to Tuscon. "The coaches are great. They treat you like you're their own child, and the players are really cool. It's a nice program, a nice environment, and it's something I want to be around."

A couple of the Wildcats' defensive backs made a distinct impression on Johnson over the weekend.

"Rob Golden was my host, but you could say that it was both him and (fellow New Orleans-area native) Jonathan McKnight hosting me," Johnson said. "They were talking about what I could bring to the table; how I could make a big impact there and that I could play as a freshman.

"I had never met Jonathan McKnight (John Curtis Christian alum) but I had heard about him."

Where do things stand today with Johnson's recruitment?

"Right now, Arizona is number one," he said. "I'm taking a visit to Southern Miss on Friday, and then I might visit either Pittsburgh or Minnesota the following week. I'm not sure about that last visit. I'm just taking things day-by-day for now."

Johnson orginally committed to Southern Miss, and there's still a chance that he could sign with the Eagles next month.
