"I called Coach (Pierre) Ingram and told him that I committed," said Porter, a two-time Class 4A first-team all-state selection. "I also called Coach Tim Leger from McNeese and let him know of my decision.
"Coach Ingram was excited and he wants me to get on the phone with Coach (Sonny) Dykes. Coach Dykes is on his way to Texas with his family, so we'll talk when he gets there."
Why did Porter choose Louisiana Tech?
"It felt right," he explained. "I've been knowing that I wanted to go there, but I had to make sure of it. I didn't want it to be a spur of the moment thing, because I felt much the same way about McNeese as I did about Tech."
The recruiting grind had been taking a toll on Porter.
"My counselor (at Northside High) told me that I had been walking around like I was sad, like something had been bothering me," said Porter. "She said that I should commit to a school when I'm ready.
"I'm feeling good - like a Bulldog! I'm ready to go. It feels like a big burden has been lifted from me. I'm walking around, smiling about it."
Porter indicated that he still plans on taking a previously-scheduled official visit to UL next weekend.
