Focus 2012: OL Kevon Beckwith

Archbishop Shaw boasts a talented group of junior prospects, including offensive lineman Kevon Beckwith. The cousin of current NFL linebacker Darry Beckwith, Kevon is a 6-foot-0, 260-pounder who has recorded eye-popping numbers in the weight room.

"The offseason is looking good," said Kevon Beckwith of Archbishop Shaw. "Ro (Romello Dixon), Ryan (Ryan Brown), and I are working out at Velocity to try and get faster. Our football team for next year will be undersized, but the leadership will be five-star. We've been running on our own, without the coaches being present."

Beckwith gets it done both on the field and in the classroom.

"I had a 3.5 grade point average last quarter and I have around a 3.2 GPA overall," he said. "My family expects me to shine in the classroom. That's in our character.

"I'm squatting 505 pounds and benching 310 pounds. My strength as a player is being physical. My cousin, Darry Beckwith, played at LSU and is currently in the NFL. He was undersized coming out of high school, like me. We're physical, though; being physical runs in my family."

What does Beckwith think about Louisiana Tech?

"I've been to the campus and it's beautiful," he said. "We (Shaw) have a couple of former players up there in Chad Boyd and Christian Lacey. I love their campus and could see myself playing there."

Archbishop Shaw narrowly missed the playoffs in 2010, but the Eagles should return to form next season, especially with the West Bank Catholic school moving back down to Class 4A.
