Downs to Central Arkansas

Bastrop center Earl Ross Downs signed with Central Arkansas yesterday and you can get his reaction here.

"I had 17 offers, but I felt most confident at Central Arkansas," said Bastrop center Earl Ross Downs. "I feel really good about it. I took my official visit there last weekend and I fit in with the players and coaches. Conway isn't huge, but it isn't little. It has a population of around 60,000 and Little Rock is only 20 minutes away. I liked how close it is to Little Rock.

"Radarious Winston, who played safety at Bastrop, is already up there and Kennedy Jones -- a teammate of mine last season -- is planning on walking-on. Our head coach (Brad Bradshaw) had good things to say about the staff at Central Arkansas."

Which other programs did Downs seriously consider?

"Nicholls State was probably my second choice," he said. "I liked them and I also had a lot of Ivy League offers. It's hard to turn those down from an educational standpoint."

Downs was the best offensive lineman on a Bastrop team that reached the Class 4A quarterfinals. The Rams scored a minimum of 36 points in all but one contest.
