Archbishop Shaw DE Enjoys USM Junior Day

Archbishop Shaw defensive end Ryan Brown participated in Southern Miss' Junior Day over the weekend. What did the coaching staff tell the rangy DL? Where will he visit next weekend?

"I love the campus," said Ryan Brown, following his visit to Southern Miss. "They have aggressive coaches and I like that. We took a tour of the campus, and it's not too big or too small.

"It's a nice campus. We ate real good, too. They don't hold back food from you in Mississippi. We saw their football dorms, which are apartments. I love the apartments. They're spacious and not small. There's an upstairs along with the downstairs and a big kitchen."

Brown said the coaches measured his height and weight, which was 6-foot-4 1/2, 241 pounds.

"We met with the position coaches after that," he said. "I already knew the coaches from a camp I previously attended at Southern Miss. The highlight to me was the discussion about grades. They pointed out that the football players have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. That's important to me.

"They're going to check with me in the spring; come watch me play, and then take it from there. They're going to bring their defensive line coach to our school. Also, their whole committee of coaches is going to evaluate my highlight tape."

Next weekend, Brown is traveling to South Florida for the Bulls' Junior Day.

"They've been in close contact, mailing me at least every other day," he said of USF. "Mississippi State also invited me to their Junior Day, along with Kansas State and Northwestern. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it all the way to Chicago, though."

Brown is an outstanding student. He scored a 20 on the ACT and maintains a 3.0 GPA. Last fall, the junior racked up 50 tackles and four sacks for Archbishop Shaw, which is situated across the Mississippi River from New Orleans.

The Eagles should have a great 2011 season after dropping down from Class 5A to 4A. Brown will lead the defense, along with Romello Dixon and Javis Aultman. Kevon Beckwith is a physical offensive linemen who will open holes for Shaw's punishing ground game.
