"It had crossed into my head that I was probably going to have to walk-on somewhere," said Fitch (6-2, 235). "I talked it over with my mom, and then I went to play in these two all-star games: The Red Stick Bowl and the Who is the Mann Classic.
"I played alright in the first one (Red Stick), but things were the same with recruiting. At the Who is the Mann game (named after Team Louisiana head coach Vincent Mann), there was a coach - Russell Thompson - from Lon Morris College (JUCO in Jackonsville, Texas). He gave me his card and told me to call him if nothing happened with recruiting."
The rest is history, so to speak.
"I called him shortly after the game signed with them on National Signing Day," said Fitch, who recorded 45 tackles, five sacks and 4 forced fumbles in 2010. "I'm going to their campus for the first time next week.
"It's another chance to play football and get recruited by the big schools. I'm ready to work and ready for the challenge. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get playing time and help my team."
Fitch is academically qualified, so he'll be eligible to transfer to a four-year school after one season.
