Gage named WR MVP at Baton Rouge NUC

Donald Gage is a top Class of 2013 football prospect, and he's also the defending Class 3A indoor state champion in the long jump.

Redemptorist won't have five-star offensive lineman Lael Collins, four-star running back Jeremy Hill, or three-star defensive Corey Trim back next year, but don't feel sorry for the Wolves.

First-year head coach Aaron Vice will have plenty of talent to work with, including two of the top '13 prospects in the state: WR/DB Donald Gage and LB Jestin Kelly.

Gage, a 5-foot-11, 165-pounder, won the WR MVP at the recent Baton Rouge National Underclassmen Combine.

"There was tough competition at the combine," said Gage, who clocked an impressive 4.48 that day. "The DBs were hard to get by; they were trying to jam me so I couldn't get off the line.

"It was all fun, though. It was like a picnic out there. It was all family and no hard feelings."

Last year, Gage spent the vast majority of his time on the defensive side of the ball.

"I played corner," he said. "It was wonderful, getting to play on ESPN against Patterson. I had 30 tackles and one interception for the season.

"Our new coach said he likes to spread the ball out, and I expect to get my highlight tape out there after this year. I'm hearing from the coaches that I'm going to play both ways. I do like wide receiver the best, and that's what I want to play in college."

Gage captured first place in the long jump at the 2011 Class 3A state indoor track meet.

"I finished third in the outdoor last year (as a freshman)," he said. "I also run the 55 meters and the 4 X 200 relay. I'm getting mail from TCU for track and Southeastern for football. My favorite schools are LSU, Alabama, and Florida State."
