Cage Wins NUC "Trifecta"

Larry Cage (Zachary HS) put himself in rare company several days ago when he won the "Trifecta" at the Baton Rouge National Underclassmen Combine. Read further to learn more.

Larry Cage is only a sophomore at Zachary High School, but he started for the Class 5A Broncos at linebacker in 2010 and followed up a great season with an exceptional performance at the recent Baton Rouge National Underclassmen Combine.

"I won the 'Trifecta,' which is the Combine King, Overall MVP, and Fastest Man," said Cage. "The last person to do it was (Dutchtown junior) Landon Collins.

"I ran a 4.40. I was actually shooting for something a little more modest, but hard work does pay off. I'm 6-foot-2, 187 pounds, and I grew up an LSU fan, so they're at the top of my list."

Which other schools does Cage favor and who is he hearing from?

"I also like Ohio State and I'm a Nick Saban fan, so I like Alabama," he said. "I'm getting mail from Oregon, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Duke."

Zachary reached the second round of the Class 5A playoffs last year before encountering eventual state champion Acadiana.

"I had 30-to-40 tackles with an interception," said Cage of his sophomore campaign. "I expect to play outside linebacker in college - or safety.

"I love playing for Coach (Neil) Weiner. We're coming together as a team at Zachary, and our coaches are showing us a few things we need to work on."
