'12 Intro: Mandeville QB Matt Bergeron

Matt Bergeron led the Mandeville Skippers to a Class 5A playoff berth last year, throwing for 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns along the way.

Mandeville had no problem scoring points in 2010. The Skippers put at least 31 on the scoreboard in 7 of 11 games, despite facing a rugged schedule that included John Curtis Christian, Archbishop Rummel, West Jefferson, and St. Paul's.

Good news abounds for the southeast Louisiana school this fall, because QB Matt Bergeron will be back once again to direct the Skippers' wide-open attack.

"I threw for 2,500 yards with 30 touchdowns last year," said Bergeron (6-0, 175). "I had approximately 400 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

"Like all teams, our main goal is to win state this (upcoming) season. To do that, we need to stay within ourselves. We need to be disciplined, execute well, and be totally committed. There was an issue last year with some players not being fully committed."

Which areas of Bergeron's game are being fine-tuned during the off-season?

"I'm trying to work on my speed (4.8)," he said. "I want to increase my weight - get bigger - and get stronger. That way, I won't be as easy to tackle and bring down in the open field. I also want to be more elusive."

What's going on with Bergeron's recruitment?

"I got invited to LSU's camp and that's the top school I'd like to play for," he said. "I used to live in Baton Rouge. I'll play for anyone, though. I just want to play college football.

"I'm hearing from several Division II schools, such as Southern Nazarene and Henderson State. I'm also getting interest from Holy Cross and Southeastern Louisiana."

Mandeville is dropping John Curtis from their schedule, but things won't get any easier, as the Skippers replace the Patriots with defending Class 3A state champ Parkview Baptist (in the season opener).

Bergeron and his teammates reached the first round of the 5A playoffs last year, where they lost a nailbiter (28-27) to Terrebonne (Houma, La.) High School.
