"Several colleges came to my school this spring. Oregon, Arizona, A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Baylor, Louisiana Tech and Houston were all there. Baylor came twice. Boise State has also asked for film."
How does Jones describe his game?
"I think I'm like Calvin Johnson," he answered. "I'm big and fast. I try to play like him and position myself well for the football when it's in the air.
"Last time I got measured, I had a 32-inch vertical. I have good jumping ability. If there's something I need to work on, I'd say my routes."
Jones, as you might expect, also shines on the basketball court. He's a forward for his respective high school and AAU teams.
"I average 15 points per game and eight rebounds," said Jones. "I think my future lies primarily with football. I'm getting more D-1 looks in football."
Jones' father is 6-foot-6 and his mother is 6-foot-2, so nice size runs in the famiy.
Wylie East, a relatively new school, graduates its first senior class in 2012. The football team went 2-8 last year with a squad comprised completely of underclassmen.
"We're young and we really didn't have any leaders last year, since we had no seniors," said Jones. "We didn't perform as well as we should have. Coach got on us hard this spring and we had some people step up.
"Every day when we would break it out, we would shout, 'SPO!'
"That stands for 'state playoffs.' We're planning to make it to the playoffs this year. Our coaches are trying to find the right players to lead us to the playoffs. We have high expectations."
