Doss commits to Tulane

The Tulane Green Wave has built a pipeline to nearby football power St. Augustine over the past several months. Three Purple Knights signed with Tulane in February, and yesterday the Green Wave landed a commitment from '11 wide receiver Lorenzo Doss.

"I committed to Tulane yesterday afternoon," said Lorenzo Doss. "The coaches were all very happy that I committed. Coach (Bob) Toledo was happy. Coach (Jason) Rollins recruited me for Tulane and made me feel comfortable. My former teammates at St. Aug (Marc Edwards, Renaldo Thomas and Lawrence Burl) all encouraged me to commit."

Who all had offered the 6-foot-0, 185-pound receiver, who is one of the best prospects in the state?

"Everybody in Louisiana except for LSU," replied Doss. "Also, TCU, Utah, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota and Southern Miss."

Last year, the Purple Knights reached the Class 5A quarterfinals before succumbing to then-undefeated St. Thomas More in a 31-27 thriller. What are the expectations in 2011?

"We expect to win the state championship in 4A," said Doss (St. Aug moved down from 5A following reclassification). "We know that if we get to the Dome, we're not going to lose there."

Doss caught 33 passes for 597 yards and five touchdowns last year, including the game-winning grab in the second-round at Ouachita. He and teammate Sydie London make for a terrific tandem at WR for the Purple Knights.

"If a DB tries to play me close, I work my feet to get separation," explained Doss. "When I get open and catch a pass, I try to get upfield as soon as possible and not juke too much. That's big with coach - getting yards after the catch.

"Sydie is really learning the game. He's getting better and better. He's been scoring a lot in 7-on-7."

St. Augustine also features sophomore RB Leonard Fournette.

"Leonard has gotten faster from running track during the spring," said Doss. "He ran a 4.3 not too long ago. Our offense should be unstoppable."
