Perkins Preparing for Huge Season

Carlton Perkins rushed for nearly 1,300 yards with 12 touchdowns as a sophomore for Walker High School, and he's putting in the work this summer to maximize his performance during the upcoming '11 season...

Carlton Perkins put together a sensational sophomore season (1,289 yards rushing, 12 TDs), especially when you consider that he only spent eight games at RB.

"I didn't start off the year at running back," said Perkins (5-11, 185). "I played the first two games at wide receiver, and then the coaches moved me to running back. I have good hands and you'll rarely see me drop a ball.

"I'm always working to improve. I've been working on my footwork this summer. We're going to run a fast-paced, no huddle offense, and I've been working with our offensive line and wide receivers. We have a new staff and a new offensive line, and we're going to be way better this year."

The Wildcats won the 2010 opener versus Morgan City, but that was the only victory of the season for the 5A school that's located approximately 10 miles east of Baton Rouge.

"Stat-wise, I had a good year as a sophomore, but we're going to be way better this year," said Perkins, who exudes confidence when he speaks. "I had to fight for everything and I did all I could.

"When I look at an opponent, he may be bigger than me, but I'm going to try to out-do him. Size isn't a factor for me when I run the ball. I picture myself as the same size as they are."

Perkins, who gained 266 yards on 19 attempts with three touchdowns vs. Catholic-BR, says he plans to run for 2,000 yards this fall. He's getting early interest from Texas A&M, TCU and Colorado State.

"I've been hearing from Texas A&M for awhile," he said. "They're my favorite, because they're the first ones who showed interest in me. I also got a letter from Colorado State today."

The two best backs (Perkins and Kaleb Blanchard of Denham Springs) of the Louisiana '13 class may be virtual neighbors, as Walker and Denham Springs are separated by only a short stretch of Interstate 12.

"We do have a rivalry," said Perkins, who will go head-to-head with Blanchard in week nine at Walker.
