Texas Defender Has Tech on Top

Russell Perkins (Arlington Sam Houston) doesn't have a Louisiana Tech offer yet, but he feels confident that one will arrive in the future if he takes care of business - as expected - on the field this fall.

"Louisiana Tech is my favorite. They're showing me a lot of love," said Russell Perkins. "Yesterday, I got a handwritten letter from the defensive coordinator, Coach (Tommy) Spangler.

"The letter was talking about the quality of life at Tech and how they have a nice room waiting for me if I sign there. They have nice apartments, not just regular dorm rooms."

Perkins has been impressed with the personal, hands-on approach that the Tech coaches have displayed during his recruitment.

"I've been getting letters from different coaches on Tech's staff for the past two weeks," said Perkins. "Coach (Stan) Eggen wrote me and talked about how Coach (Sonny) Dykes is a good young coach. They mentioned how Tech beat Alabama and Michigan State on the road.

"They said if I was able to camp at Tech, I'd have an offer already. I can't get over to Ruston this summer because of the distance, but in a way I'm glad they haven't offered yet, because that keeps me humble."

Perkins plans to take an official visit to Tech and it's conceivable that he'll commit then, if things fall into place.

"I want to go to Tech," he said. "Baylor, Oklahoma and Tulsa are all starting to recruit me hard, but I like what Tech's coaches are saying.

"They say their team is a family and it will feel like home there. They want to get more film of me doing open field covering this season. After they watch the film, I think they'll offer."
