Don't Sweat It

The last week in February is a week of nervous anticipation. Fans want to know who else will commit to their team, but they also worry about who they may lose.

In recent years, Louisiana Tech lost players like Bret Jefcoat, Kevin Smith, Bud Patterson, and Nick Chartain. Players like D' Montreal Wilson never committed to Tech, but they were top targets that signed with other schools late. At the time, some of the players seemed to be big losses. Jefcoat, Chartain, Wilson, and Patterson don't appear to still be with the team's they originally signed with, so maybe they would not have worked out at Tech either.

Current commitments Kendrick James, Tyrone Duplessis, Doak Raulston, Lyle Fitte, and L'Damain Washington have all been pursued by other schools. They all say they are still committed to Tech. If this year is like any other, one player could very likely jump ship. Whether we lose a player or not, the coaching staff has done an outstanding job. They have learned from years past and planned ahead this year for other schools to come in on their players. They have 25 commitments earlier than ever before and are still on a couple of really good players. If they keep everyone and end up oversigning by two or three, they still have a plan in place. Tech can let a player enroll in the winter quarter and they won't count against the 25 man limit until the 2010 class.

Of course, no one wants to lose any of our current commitments. If one of them does leave, it will still be hard to take. I think our coaches have a done a great job keeping this class together. L'Damain Washington is visting Nebraska this weekend and it is never a done deal until signing day. Just remember, for every Bret Befcoat and Bud Patterson, there are more like Philip Livas, Adrien Cole, Mason Hitt, and Darrius Terry.
