Porter back from unofficial visit

Louisiana Tech wants to land defensive tackle Tyler Porter of Northside High School. A couple of weeks ago, Porter informed the Tech staff that he wanted to visit a couple more schools before arriving at a decision. The senior checked out one of those schools this weekend. What's his reaction?

Tyler Porter made an impromptu visit to McNeese State yesterday and HereComeTheDawgs.com spoke with the Northside senior this morning to get his reaction.

"My cousin is starting school at McNeese and she asked me to help her move down there," said Porter. "Their coaches have been wanting me to check them out and so I stopped by yesterday. When I came through, they were having a scrimmage and I watched a couple of guys I know, Diontae Spencer (Westgate product) and Jereon McGilvery, a former teammate of mine at Northside. I was a little surprised to see Spencer getting in the rotation with the 1's. I was impressed to see the young guys getting reps.

"I'm back home in Lafayette now. It was basically an in and out thing. School started Thursday and it's going really well. I'm loving it. I know all the teachers at Northside. I already knew most of them before I got elected as senior class president, and I met the rest of them after that. I think it surprised some of them to find out that I'm not just about football."

Speaking of football, how's practice coming along?

"We're getting after it," said Porter. "We have a couple of coaches - Tyson Andrus and Trev Faulk - who both played at LSU, so they bring that type of intensity to Northside. Trev was here last year, coaching our linebackers, and Tyson is a new coach. He's (Andrus) also a Northside grad.

"We scrimmage LaGrange this week in Lake Charles. I was talking to a guy at the McNeese scrimmage yesterday and he was telling me about LaGrange and their best player, Darius Edwards. The next week, we play Catholic-New Iberia in the jamboree, and I'm wondering what they're going to with (WR) Devin Boutte this year; seems like they might move him to QB after their quarterback last year (Taylor Bullock) went to Tulane."

There were reports that Porter was close to committing to Louisiana Tech a couple of weeks ago. How is his relationship with the Bulldogs' staff?

"Coach (Stan) Eggen is really cool," Porter said. "He's an understanding guy and he told me to just let them know when I'm ready to commit. I was talking to DeMarcus Hodge about Tech before he committed to Arkansas and I'm talking to Chuck Hunter about it too.

"I'll help recruit any player, no matter how many stars they have. It would be really nice to get Chuck up there with me on the defensive line. If he chooses Tech, then I think we could make some things stick up there."
