Louisiana Prep Football: Week 1

Last week, Crowley RB Davante' Bourque (pictured) averaged more than 20 yards per carry in the Gents' jamboree win over Erath. What's on tap for the dynamic junior this week? We'll answer that question, as well as examine several of the high-profile games around the state.

Starting tomorrow night, prep football opens with a bang in Louisiana and there's quite a few entertaining matchups on the slate, beginning with 5A East St. John at 3A Patterson. The visiting Wildcats, led by senior cornerback Floyd Raven, will attempt to slow down four-star RB Kenny Hilliard (LSU commit) and the Lumberjacks. Last week, East St. John was upset by 2A St. Charles Catholic in jamboree action. Patterson CB Dexter Aucoin, a Tulsa commit, will get the tough task of attempting to contain WR Dhaquille Williams.

5A Airline plays host to 4A Haughton in a northwest Louisiana regional rivalry. Airline's Myles Moss showed off his playmaking ability in the Vikings' 21-7 jamboree win over Benton. Haughton seeks to rebound after dropping its jamboree contest with district foe Parkway. QB Dak Prescott, a Mississippi State commit, should put up big numbers for the Buccaneers. His favorite targets are WRs Damon Gladney and Jordan Craft.

4A McDonogh 35, which has several senior college prospects, travels to 5A Thibodaux. The visiting Roneagles have an exciting wide-open offense, with Kentucky commit Theltus Cobbins at QB. WRs Trey Carter and Charles Henderson (Utah commit) are dangerous in space. Thibodaux will counter with a trio of effective RBs that should find room behind the blocking of four-star offensive lineman Greg Robinson. THS cornerback Cartel Murray will get the chance to make plays against the pass-happy McDonogh offense.

Lafayette's top two programs, 5A Acadiana and 4A Northside, meet on Friday. This will be a battle won on the front lines, with the Rams' vaunted veer offense working to move the ball against the stalwart Northside defensive line. Acadiana has a challenge in trying establish the inside dive against DT Tyler Porter.

Defending 4A state champion Neville and DT DeMarcus Hodge, an Arkansas commit, will take the ride east a few miles to face the 5A Ouachita Lions and LB/S Terron Bell. Neville QB John Diarse had his way with Bastrop last week, while Ouachita may be one of the most underrated teams in its classification.

Expect lots of points when 5A Dutchtown squares off with 4A Lutcher. RB Effrem Reed enjoyed an outstanding night running the ball last week (vs Walker) for Dutchtown, while Lutcher has two fantastic players in four-star WR Jarvis Landry (LSU commit) and junior RB Daniel Taylor.

3A Crowley entertains 4A Jennings in another potential offensive slugfest. With athletic QB Bryson Abraham under center, Jennings scored early and often last week versus Welsh. The Gents have their own big-time weapon in junior star Davante' Bourque, who broke off some jaw-dropping jaunts -- including a stunning 90-yard TD run -- Friday against Erath.
