Carter puts on a show

Montrel Carter, the human highlight film from Cecilia High School, dazzled everyone in attendance at his team's game vs. Avoyelles Friday night. Read further to get the details.

Many players don't find the end zone six times in their career, but Montrel Carter crossed the goal-line six times Friday night for Cecilia High School.

"I had around 300 all-purpose yards," said Carter of his stat line from Cecilia's 42-20 road win at Avoyelles. "I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I had two receptions for maybe 35 yards and around 100 yards rushing.

"The first touchdown was on a 60-yard punt return. On their next drive, one of our defensive players stripped the ball and we recovered the fumble. When we took over on offense, I had those two catches and then I scored on a run from five yards out.

"In the second quarter, we stopped them on a fourth down and got the ball back. Our backup fullback broke off a big run and I ran it in from 15 yards.

"After that, I scored on another five-yard run. I had a 35-yard carry on a right sweep to set it up - where they pushed me out of bounds at the five."

The last two touchdowns came on kick returns.

"I was standing near their sideline waiting for them to kick the ball," said Carter, "and one of their coaches told me that they were going to kick it to No. 3 (Carter's jersey number) and that they were going to take my head off.

"I caught the kick and returned it for a 65-yard TD. On the last one, they kicked it straight to me and I reversed field and brought it back for another TD; it was from 60-65 yards out."

Carter and his teammates - following a mediocre showing in a jamboree loss to Lafayette the previous week - were motivated to get a win in the season opener.

"The seniors wanted to come out strong," he said, "and we have a lot of weapons on offense. It's not just me back there. We should be able to put a lot of points on the board this year.

"Our quarterback went 6-for-6 on Friday and our junior fullback, Jeremy Doucette, loves to hit. When he hits somebody, they know that they've been hit.

"Jeremy is definitely a college prospect. He spends a lot of time at linebacker for us too."

Carter mostly plays running back for Cecilia, but he's projected as an all-purpose player in college. He currently has seven scholarship offers.
