Cajuns To Take Part In CIT

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team's season will continue on into the postseason after accepting an invitation to participate in the Postseason Tournament.

The Cajuns will be on the road for the first round of the 32-team event and will take on Incarnate Word on Tuesday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. in San Antonio. It will be the second time UL has taken part in the CIT, having previously done so in 2011-12. With a win the Cajuns would move on to the second round, to be played either March 20 or 21.

This year marks the seventh year of the CIT, which is made up of a 32-team field from non-BCS programs not selected to participate in the NCAA or NIT. All 31 games are played on campus sites. In an effort to minimize travel and limit class time missed, the CIT uses the old NIT model, with future round opponents determined by results of the previous round.

Louisiana won its final six games of the regular season and its quarterfinal matchup of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday over Texas State before falling to eventual tournament champion Georgia State in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

This will be the first meeting between the Cajuns and Cardinals, who are in their second year of transition to Division I. They are a member of the Southland Conference.

The Cajuns enter the tournament at 20-13 overall, ranking 18th in the country in scoring at 77.4 points per game and is fourth in the nation with 39.8 total rebounds per game.

Louisiana sports a pair of all-Sun Belt Conference players in big man Shawn Long (16.4 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and point guard Jay Wright (9.1 ppg, 3.5 apg), while junior guard Kasey Shepherd is coming off all-tournament honors at the SBC Tournament this week.

The Cardinals went 18-10 this year with out-of-conference victories at Princeton, Nebraska, UMKC and Grand Canyon. They finished in fifth place in the Southland Conference with a 10-8 record. UIW is seventh in the nation in scoring at 79.6 points per game.

UIW is led by senior guard Denzel Livingston who was named first team all-Southland Conference earlier this week. He is fourth in the nation in scoring at 22.0 points per game while averaging 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
