Troy, Ala. – The Louisiana baseball team kept its season alive on Friday night as the Ragin' Cajuns defeated UT Arlington 5-1 in an elimination game at the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Tournament hosted at Riddle-Pace Field.
The win propels the Cajuns (36-21) to a rematch with Texas State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to decide who will go to the championship game. Louisiana will have to defeat the Bobcats (24-30-1) twice, while Texas State needs just one win to advance.
Freshman right-hander Evan Guillory posted his sixth quality start of the season and second against the Mavericks (24-32) en route to his fourth victory of the year. Guillory held UTA to one runs on five hits in six innings while matching his career-high with seven strikeouts.
Reliever Chris Charpentier combined with Guillory to strike out 13, which ties the season-high for a nine-inning contest. Charpentier earned his first career save in the outing tossing three scoreless innings to close out the game.
"When you get this late in a tournament and you have to work your way back through the loser's bracket, this kind of pitching performance is going to be really important," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Evan did a great job. We've been starting freshmen all year, they've done a phenomenal job and tonight he did a beautiful job for us. Our hitters did a job early. They did shut us down midway through the game, but because of good pitching with Evan we were able to get this one in. So now we survive and advance."
UTA starter Brad Vasser (2-7) took the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits in an inning of work. The Cajuns also touched reliever Jacob Moreland for three runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings.
Louisiana outhit UT Arlington 12-5, as the Cajuns have posted double-digit hits in all three tournament games.
Centerfielder Kyle Clement led the Ragin' Cajuns in hitting for the second straight day going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and scored twice. Stefan Trosclair and Tyler Girouard each had two hits, while Dylan Butler had a game-high two RBI.
Girouard gave the Cajuns a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first on a two-out double to left scoring Clement from second base.
In the bottom of the second, Butler added two more runs as he singled up the middle to score catcher Nick Thuman and third baseman Joe Robbins. Two batters later, Clement brought home shortstop Blake Trahan on a single to center to extend the lead to 4-0.
Trosclair singled in an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth sending a ball through the left side of the infield to score Clement from second with two outs.
The Mavericks picked up the final run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left by first baseman Levi Scott to make the final 5-1.
All of the Cajuns remaining games at the tournament can be heard live on KPEL 96.5 FM with Jay Walker making the call. The games will also be broadcast on ESPN3 as Matt Stewart will provide play-by-play.
