After his junior season at Magnolia West HS (TX), Damarren Mitchell was the District 19-5A All-Purpose MVP and also a first-team all-district selection at defensive back. Playing both ways, Mitchell amassed 750 yards on 35 receptions and scored 7 TD’s. On the defensive side of the football Damarren was equally impressive with 103 tackles, 4 forced fumbles and 4 interceptions. After earning those honors last season, Mitchell has only received offers from Georgia Southern and Texas State early this summer. But after his camp performance at the Ragin’ Cajun’s Shreveport camp this week, the Texas prep standout quickly earned his third.
“It’s a blessing to receive my third offer from Louisiana-Lafayette,” Mitchell stated. “Coach Hudspeth told after the camp that they were impressed with the way I worked hard during the camp and took instruction well. He told me to keeping working hard and I would get an offer soon, I had no idea that it would come this week. Coach Hudspeth told me he wanted to let me know the Ragin’ Cajuns were officially offering me today!”
Damarren Mitchell began to turn heads early in Tuesday’s camp after running a 4.43 in the forty. He showed a good pack peddle in the drills and was able to flip his hips well running with the receiver. He broke on the ball well and showed good hands. Damarren talked about his camp experience and working out for the staff for the first time.
“That was the first time I’ve met the staff, other than my area recruiter Coach Munoz,” Damarren mentioned. “Coach Harbison was really great coaching me on technique and not getting down on me when he corrected something I was doing. Coach Smith was great too; both of those guys showed patience and kept me focused on the things they were teaching. I really liked my camp experience with the staff.”
Mitchell and his teammates including QB Tyler Ferre whom also attended the Shreveport camp began playing 7-on-7 football games Thursday. Mitchell also plans to attend football camps at Iowa State and Houston this month.
“We began our 7-on-7 games yesterday and playing for the state championship this summer,” Mitchell said. “I’m going to the Iowa State camp this weekend and then we plan on attending the Houston camp later this month. Coach Hudspeth wants me to come down to Lafayette and take a look at the program up close; the facilities and the campus. So I’m looking forward to getting down there and taking a closer look at the program.”
With Damarren Mitchell’s summer plans, he is certain to garner more offers and invitations to visit college football programs in the region.
