Cajuns Open Sun Belt Play, Face ASU

Louisiana opens Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when the Cajuns travel to play Arkansas State in a three-game series in Jonesboro,Arkansas.

The series is the conference opener for the Cajuns and Red Wolves, and will open with a 6:00 p.m. game Friday. The series will continue Saturday at 2:00 p.m. before wrapping up Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Arkansas State will take the field at 2-5 Friday after dropping both of its midweek games this week. The Red Wolves ended up on the wrong end of an 11-5 game Tuesday on the road at No. 14 Ole Miss, then fell at Murray State Wednesday by the same score. The Ragin' Cajuns travel to Jonesboro at 4-5-1 on the season and have won three consecutive heading into the weekend.

Louisiana won the final game of their series at Southern Miss 7-5 last weekend, then defeated Houston 6-1 and Texas Southern 13-0 in midweek action this week.

Senior Chase Ware will get the start Friday night in the series opener against the Ragin' Cajuns. Ware is 1-0 on the season with an ERA of 3.60 in two appearances on the mound. In 10 innings of work, Ware has given up six runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Senior Jett Jones will open on the mound in Saturday's game two. Jones is 0-1 on the season through two appearances. He has given up nine runs on 10 hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 7.2 innings of action. The ASU starter for Sunday's finale has not been decided.

Junior Zach Osborne will face off against Chase Ware Friday night. Osbounre is 0-1 on the season with an ERA of 6.75 in two appearances on the mound. Sophomore Michael Cook will be matched against Jett Jones on the mound Saturday. Cook is 1-1 on the season, in two starts and has an ERA of 7.56. Junior Greg Wilborn will get the nod Sunday in the series final game. Wilborn is 1-0 on the season and has a 4.09 ERA. on the mound.

Arkansas State swept the Cajuns in last year's Sun Belt Conference opening series in Lafayette. The Cajuns went down by scores of 3-0, 9-5 and 9-2. The pitchers of record, in order, were Danny Farquhar, Hunter Moody and Brent Solich.

Louisiana last traveled to Jonesboro in 2007 for a weekend series Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29. The Cajuns took two of three in that series, by scores of 6-5 (11 innings), 11-7, and dropped the Sunday game by a score of 4-2. That puts the Red Wolves on a four-game winning streak over the Cajuns. Prior to that, UL had been on a six-game streak against A-State.
