Most high school athletes will never get the opportunity to play a college sport on scholarship, but Comeaux High athlete Michael Strentz might have offers in baseball and football for 2010. The 6-0, 180-pound Strentz is considered a mid-major prospect in football and a solid Div.1 prospect in baseball, does he have a favorite?
"Well, when I start football in the fall, that's all I think about," said Strentz. "I really love football, but then spring comes and I get into baseball and football is not even on my mind. I don't have a favorite sport; I really love to play them both."
Strentz is part of a solid Comeaux High baseball program that is playing for a 5A playoff appearance. Michael Strentz is currently hitting .398 with 10 homeruns and 33 RBI on the season.
"Yes sir, we have a big district game tomorrow night against Acadiana High," Michael stated. "They will probably pitch Colton Daigle (2009 UL Signee) against us, but we have hit well against him earlier this season. After Acadiana High, we will play Sulphur in our final regular season game. We need at least a split to make the playoffs, but we want to win both games."
Michael Strentz didn't take long during the 2008 football season to make an impression of local fans. In the first game of the season against cross town rival Northside High, Strentz had 165 yards receiving, 3 Td's, 89 yards rushing and 2 Td's. Michael's effort of 254 yards of total offense and 5 Td's earned him the Acadiana Prep Football Athlete of the Week award.
"Yes sir, that was a great way to begin the season," said Strentz. "We had a good team; we just had a few tough games down the stretch and didn't finish strong. I'm hearing from Arkansas, Texas A&M, UL, Tulane and several other state schools right now. I'm playing summer baseball for the Legends, so I haven't scheduled any football camps.
Michael Strentz maintains a 2.9 GPA and recently scored a 17 on his first ACT test.
