Scrimmage Report

ITV's analysis, with complete statistics, of the Cardinals first full scrimmage of spring practice.

The first full scrimmage was today. It was a little cold, but I was surprised at the number of people that showed up to watch today.

I love this coaching staff. Each one is very intense. I liked the defense and how when they made a play all of the defense on and off of the field yelled and pumped each other up. The defense dominated early, then the offense started moving the ball better later.

Antoine Harris made some great catches today, but also dropped one wide open pass right in his hands. He later made up for it by snagging a pass that looked like it was going to be intercepted by Laroni Gallishaw. JR Russell also had a solid day. Harris had 87 yards receiving and Russell added 50. Dontay Spillman had 80 yards receiving and could have had more with a couple of dropped passes. Broderick Clark finished with only 14 yards on a subpar performance.

Lionel Gates had a very good day with 64 rushing yards on 16 carries. Eric Shelton added 61 yards on 13 carries. True freshman Reggie Bradshaw is going to be a good runningback. He has very good speed and knows how to lower his shoulder to get some extra yards. He had 11 carries for 47 yards. T.J. Patterson had 11 carries for 35 yards.

The quarterback race is on. Round 2 was today and Stefan LeFors won today's round. He was the most stable of the QB's. He threw the ball on the run, in the pocket and showed his elusiveness as well. Score it, LeFors 10, Justin Rascati 7 today. Rascati had some good moments, but he looked nervous early. LeFors was 15 of 23 for 172 yards and Rascati was 13 for 22 138 yards. Both threw 2 TD's each

The defense did a great job on the run and pass today. Gallishaw had one pick and knocked the ball down a number of times. Kerry Rhodes played solid at safety. Brent Johnson had some solid hits from the other safety spot. I would have to give Montavious Stanley the defensive MVP today. He had at least 3 or 4 sacks today. Brandon Johnson is going to be hard to contain with great speed and also had a sack or 2.

Robert McCune is all over the field looking to make a play. Minkins did a good job helping contain the run early. He made some good open field tackles and a couple in the backfield. Matt Sander has put on a bunch of weight and looks great on defensive line.

We have speed on defense and as they learn this new system I think they will be able to stop some people. I like how they fly to the ball and gang tackle. They don't leave it up to one person to make the play. It's going to be a fun spring watching these kids fight for their positions.

The offense had moments where they looked in total sync. If you think about it, they had only 6 practices to get ready for this spring scrimmage. Just imagine after this spring and two a days next fall. Next Saturday should be interesting to see how much better they know this new offense.
