DeAndre Herron is attempting to hold back at the moment, but the excitement is clear, as the 6-6, 310-lb offensive tackle earned his first scholarship offer today.
It all started when Herron's high school coach told him Louisville wanted to speak with him. That seemed odd to Herron, as he had not ever heard from the Cardinals before. Once he got through, he thought it was just another introductory talk, but it turned out to be much more.
"Coach was like, hey I'm going to hand the phone over to our O-Line coach. I talked to the O-Line coach and he asked me for my height and weight and then he was like they need linemen this year. They need big power linemen and stuff. I was just thinking he's about to ask me to go for a visit. Then he was like, I need to tell you we're going to give you an offer and I couldn't believe it."
Herron was in disbelief.
"I asked him to say it two or three more times again. I was going crazy. I was like, oh my God. I know he thinks I'm crazy."
Crazy or not, the Cardinals see the potential in Herron, who won MVP awards at the last two camps he has been to. He has not yet been to Louisville, but he hopes to go soon.
"I told him I'd call him and find a good time to come down there. Right now, early March is not a good time because we have football and SAT's coming up. Towards end of March, I want to go down there. I want to try to go down there as much as I can."
The Cardinals are not the only school trying to get the big man to come for a visit.
"A lot of schools tell me to come visit like Michigan, South Alabama, Northern Illinois, Purdue, but one bad thing about it, they're all on the 26th, and I have a combine that day. Wisconsin asked me to have one, but I had lift competition, so I was kind of down about that because I like Wisconsin."
He may be down about that missed visit, but this offer has Herron on cloud nine, and thinking that his prayers were answered.
"I feel blessed. I pray every night before I go to bed that hopefully something comes true. It was a real good feeling. I'm not going to get all big headed. I know I still have to work and get my senior year done. This is just beginning."
We think it's just the beginning too.
