Jurich Speaks

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich discussed the state of his department, the importance of NCAA rules compliance, the upcoming football season and the benefits of the UofL-UK football series at Thursday's Governor's Cup outing.

On the state of the program
"We're excited. The Yum! Center was fantastic. The opening of (expanded) Papa John's was spectacular and to be able to sell out all of our games last year was a credit to Charlie Strong and the enthusiasm he brought to the program.

"All across the board all the sports had a phenomenal year. I think we can have an even better year this year. We've never been one to rest on our laurels. We look at last year across the board as a rebuilding one. There's going to be so many exciting things happen. Soccer has a great opportunity to make another run towards the national title. The cross country's, volleyball's, and both basketball teams are going to be strong. All the way through I think it's going to be an exciting year."

On NCAA rules compliance
"The most important thing is that they have class and integrity. I have a hard time sleeping anyway. I certainly don't want to go to bed thinking about [whether] my coach is doing something I should be worried about. That's the one thing I want to commend all 23 of our coaches. There fantastic at that [following NCAA rules]. We've had a great run with compliance and it's something I appreciate."

On the upcoming football season
"We've got a very young team. If we can stay healthy we could be good. But football is a tough game, a lot of injuries pop up. But I think the one great thing that we're going to have is great continuity on the coaching staff, a lot of young recruits that have a lot of energy and want to learn. And Charlie has already proven he's a master at taking very average players and turning them into very good players."

On the UL-UK football series
"We're not shy about saying it, we love it the first game, we love it on the third game, too," Jurich said. "We love playing the game. I think that's the most important thing. I don't want that to get lost. I think the coaches, the kids and all activities that surround it are fantastic. It's been great for both programs."
