Benavides talks Belk; Strong coaching rumors

Louisville junior center Mario Benavides met with reporters Monday to talk about the Belk Bowl against N.C. State and Charlie Strong rumors.

If Mario Benavides is concerned that Charlie Strong might not be Louisville's coach next season he didn't sound like it Monday.

Meeting with reporters to discuss the Cardinals Belk Bowl game against NC State in Charlotte, the junior center said this about rumors that Strong is a top candidate to replace Mike Sherman at Texas A&M:

"I'd like to say that's a testament to him and all the players here and the whole staff," Benavides said. "Really it's kind of a compliment when it all comes out. But as far as being concerned about him being up for all these jobs, not really because the attitude I get from him – we love him here and I have a feeling he loves it here. I feel like he's fully committed to the program. If anything it's a compliment because it means he's doing a really good here and we're proud of him."

Has Strong addressed the team about the rumors?

"No, he hasn't," Benavides said. "I think he pays as much attention to them (rumors) as we do, which is not very much. I think he's happy here. Whatever he decides is best for him and his family. But he's got us going on a roll here and I think he likes the players here and the community. So we don't talk about it that much."
