Smith (6'7, 200) averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds his freshman season at SE Illinois Community College. He was named MVP of the Region XXIV Tournament and was honored on the NJCAA All Tournament team in Hutchinson, KS after leading SE Illinois to the quarterfinals of the national junior college tournament.
Smith, who is from LaGrange in Oldham County, was an All-State selection his senior year at Oldham County High School.
ITV caught up with Smith shortly after he informed the Cardinals coaching staff that he would accept their scholorship offer.
ITV: When I spoke with you on Monday, you said that Louisville is a place that you'd definitely like to play. I understand you made a decision about that.
Smith: Yes, I went ahead and made my decision today just to get it out of the way. That way nobody else will be calling my house. This is it.
ITV: What impression did you get of the Louisville program from your two recent visits?
Smith: I really liked it. I thought everybody was real nice. I felt like it was a place where I could fit in with the coaches and the players.
ITV: What do you think of Coach Pitino?
Smith: He's a real good guy, I like him a lot. He'll be a good coach to play for.
ITV: Being from Oldham County, did you grow up watching the Cardinals?
Smith: Actually I liked Kentucky growing up, but the rest of family likes Louisville, so they are all really happy. They are supporting me 100% and they like Louisville, so they are all excited.
ITV: Being named a Junior College Freshman All-American must be quite an honor. What was your reaction?
Smith: I didn't let it get to me, but it was a good feeling. I didn't expect to do that good my first year.
ITV: Your game seems to have really developed since graduating from Oldham County High School. What are you doing to continue to improve your play?
Smith: My coach has really worked with me a lot. He has helped me develop my shot by putting it up higher. Everyday he'd get with me and do drills working on my shooting. Since then everything just started going real good.
ITV: What has Coach Pitino asked you to continue to work on?
Smith: He asked me what my weakness was and I told him it was my mid-range jumper, so I'll be working on that everyday.
ITV: I've been told that you run the floor well and have a nice outside shot.
Smith: I really like playing the wing. I'm pretty comfortable with my outside shot too.
ITV: Did you get you any scholorship offers before Louisville?
