"I'll be going up there (Wake Forest) for the first time," Rankins said. "It's down to them and Louisville. I'm looking forward to getting a feel for everything there and get the players input on what the coaches are like and what it's like day-to-day at Wake Forest."
Charlie Strong and assistant Kenny Carter met with Rankins and his family Monday.
"It was a great meeting," Rankins said. "Louisville is doing some big things. This year getting those four-star linebackers and picking up (Brandon) Radcliff the other day. They're really putting pieces together to make their move and be one of those teams to be reckoned with. It was a good visit. They met my whole family. It wasn't all about football and trying to get me to commit. It was a fun visit. We talked about politics, remincised, ate some food. It was an overall great visit."
"What recruit doesn't want to be part of something like that?" Rankins asked. "At the end of the day, it's not who you're going to play with, it's how comfortable you are."
Rankins, who made an official visit to Louisville in December, said he's feels very comfortable with Louisville's coaching staff and players.
"When I get around them I feel comfortable," Rankins said. "You don't have to think about stuff before you say it around them. You can just be open and say what's on your mind. You know they'e not going to judge you or come down on you hard. It's just a great staff and cool people to be around."
Louisville is recruiting Rankins to fill the slot at strong side defensive end.
"The spots right there for the taking," Rankins said. "All I have to do is prove that I'm ready to contribute early in my career."
After he visits Wake Forest, Rankins said he'll make his decision early next week. How will Rankins choose between the two programs?
"It's going to come down to how comfortable I am around everybody - the players, the coaching staff, the trainers," Rankins said. "Education is important. You can't beat Wake Forest's education, but at the same time Louisville is a great institution. And playing time is a factor. At both schools I'll fight for a starting spot and early playing time."
Rankins Facebook profile photo features a Louisville football helmet. Is that a hint of his upcoming decision?
"We'll see," Rankins said. "i'm not going to say it is because I haven't been to Wake Forest yet. We'll see next week."
