A call down to his coach's office produced a day to remember for Conner High quarterback Drew Barker today, as the Louisville Cardinals became the first to offer the 6'3, 205-lb sophomore.
"I went down to my coach's office, my head coach and he told me to call Coach Watson, and he said 'we're wrapping up the 2013 class, we've almost got everybody we want and we'd like to get a head start on 2014 and want you to be the first guy we offer. I heard that, I was like wow. I previously went down there and visited a couple weeks ago and Coach Strong and Coach Watson had seen me throw before, but they said come down to camp to get your offer. It was pretty awesome they did it before."
For a multitude of reasons, Barker says the Cards will be tough to beat.
"They're definitely very high. Coach Strong is turning it around down there. They're bringing in top recruits, playing for championships, the staff is committed to the program and they're going to be a national competitor and I'd love to be a part of that. They're definitely on the rise, and I'm going to look into Louisville. I've very interested in them."
Barker has visited a handful of schools and more are supposed to be part of his busy next few months.
"UK's coming up to my school next week. I have the Elite 11 May 4th and NIKE Training Camp on May 5th. I'm going to some schools over the summer. I'm to Vanderbilt for a visit and camp, Penn State for a visit and camp, Louisville, Ohio State, they said they're going to be down sometime in May. The quarterback coach and Coach Coombs said they'd be down and want to see me throw before they offer."
For now though, Barker will just enjoy today as the luster of the first offer is still fresh.
"Yeah, I called my dad first and I told him I just got my first offer, he couldn't believe it. It's very surreal for all of my family and everything. Everyone is texting me and my Twitter is blowing up and stuff. Ever since I was a little kid, I've been dreaming of playing college football. The day finally hear you've been extended an offer, it's like, wow, this is for real."
