U of L women in final three for Illinois star

University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz and his staff are on the road this month, recruiting for the future. The Cardinals are in on several of the top players in the country. Cardinal Authority caught up with one top target.

Emmonie Henderson is a 6-foot-2 forward from Edwarsville, Ill., and told Cardinal Authority in an interview that she has Cardinals in her final three.

Henderson, who played in an event recently in Louisville with adidas Team St. Louis, said her final three is U of L, Tennessee and Purdue. She had also been previously looking at Kentucky and Miami.

"I'll take some visits and make my decision before basketball starts," Henderson said. "I like (the process) but I want to make a decision before the season starts.

"This is what I have worked hard for all of my life."

Henderson, also a star in track and field, spoke highly of the Louisville program and the coaching staff. Several current U of L players came to watch her play in the AAU event recently at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center.

U of L coach Jeff Walz was there for each of her games.

"The players, the school, the campus, I like everything about it," Henderson said. "The coaches are great. When I saw the dorms, I was like ‘Oh yeah.' I just like the atmosphere around there."

Henderson said the Cardinals have something else going for them, noting that she "just like to be coached by a guy more often."

A two-time first-team All-State selection, Henderson averaged 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds a game and helped her team to the Class 4-A state title game. She set a 4-A record for rebounds in a state tournament game with 20 in the semifinals.

Henderson also holds the state record in the shot put and is a standout discus thrower also. She won the state title in both last year and is ranked at No. 2 among those throwing the shot put in high school nationally.

The U of L track coaches are also recruiting Henderson, who will play both sports in college.

"The throwing coaches there are awesome," she said of Louisville.
