Major contract extension for U of L coach

There has been a lot happening around the University of Louisville athletic department this spring and summer. One thing that flew under the radar was a major contract extension for one of the school's top head coaches.

At a recent meeting, the University of Louisville Athletic Association approved the terms of a seven-year contract extension for women's basketball coach Jeff Walz.

Under the new deal, Walz will be at U of L through June 30, 2019.

"I love everything about the University of Louisville," Walz told Cardinal Authority. "I love the players, the program the administration and we have the best fans in the country. It's just a great place to work.

"I am so excited to know I am going to be here for a long, long time."

Walz lauded athletic director Tom Jurich, noting the two have had numerous conversations about the future of the program and where it's headed.

"Tom is the best and he completely understands it," Walz said. "He knows what we're trying to do and how we're trying to build this program.

"He wants the same things we want and that is to compete on the national level and win championships and that's what we plan on doing at Louisville."

The amount of the new contract was not revealed at this time, but the contract also contains two retention bonuses with the first coming on April 1, 2016 and the second on April 1, 2019.

The contract also includes incentives for Big East Championships and NCAA Tournament performances. It also includes academic incentives if the program stays at 950 or above in the APR. There are also bonuses for league and national honors.

In five years as the head coach at U of L, Walz has a record of 119-56. U of L has been to the NCAA Tournament four of five years, including the 2009 season when the Cardinals lost to Connecticut in the national title game.
