ABCD: Underclassmen like Cards

TEANECK, NJ -- An exciting week of action at the adidas ABCD Camp concluded Friday night with an exciting display in the all-star games. Here's report from Friday and you won't want to the recruiting tidbits from underclass prospects who like the Cards.

ABCD:  Exciting Week of Action Ends

InsideTheVille.com had a great week in Teaneck, NJ covering the 2003 adidas ABCD Camp at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  We met some new friends and had a chance to re-visit with some old ones along the recruiting trail.

We also saw first hand over 200 of the nation's top high school basketball players compete against one another all week in head to head competition and had the opportunity to speak with over a dozen University of Louisville basketball prospects about their camp experience and interest in the Cardinal basketball program.

One thing is apparent from our time spent in Teaneck.  The allure of the UofL basketball program under Head Coach Rick Pitino is strong and is just beginning to realize its full potential.

If you think the Cards are mentioned by many players in the class of 2004, just wait until the classes of 2005 and 2006 begin naming their lists of favorite schools in the upcoming months.  An example, two top juniors and one sophomore already have placed the Cards at the top of their now forming lists.  We'll have interviews with these players and more next week, as well as plenty of photos and video of the prospects you want to see.

But before that...we want to give you one more report from Friday's final day of camp...

News and Notes

6'7 Jeremiah Bryant, a junior forward and teammate of 6'11 Clarence Holloway at Chicago Fenger High, played great against 6'11 future NBA'er Dwight Howard during the Friday morning session...Bryant had 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks against Howard and was named to the underclassmen all-star game.....Bryant, an athletic defender and rebounder, expressed strong interest in the Cards.....

Bryant's teammate, Clarence Holloway, had a solid week at camp, and proved one of the top junior big men at ABCD...Holloway averaged 6 points and 6 rebounds and was honored by being named to the underclass all-star game...He posted 8 points and 6 rebounds in the all-star contest.....

6'7 Antonio Pena, the junior teammate of Sebastian Telfair at Brooklyn Lincoln High, had an excellent week at ABCD....The skilled power forward showed great promise and was easily one of the top juniors at camp all week.....He made the underclassmen all-star game as well and expressed a strong interest in UofL last week......Apparently the Cardinal coaches are aware of this Jamal Mashburn play alike.........

6'3 Javarris Crittendon, a sophomore guard from Atlanta, GA, had an excellent week in camp.....Crittendon is a big guard with skills and was yet another underclassman to express strong interest in the Cards.........

Word filtering through the ABCD Camp on Friday was that 6'7 Donta Smith was tearing up the competition at Rick Ball's JUCO camp in Indianapolis.....While some have mentioned a straight jump to the NBA, don't look for that to happen....NBA scouts have become weary of drafting players from the JUCO ranks after being burned by several prospects in recent years......

While 6'6 Lorenzo Wade is long and skilled and 6'5 J.R. Smith is an athletic slasher, we're convinced 6'7 Donta Smith is the better prospect of the three wing players that considered the Cards before the JUCO made his decision to join the fold last month.....

6'2 Rajon Rondo turned it around during the last two days of camp, handing out 12 assists in his last two games....the UofL coaching staff checked out his Friday afternoon game and Rondo finished in the top 10 in camp in the steals category......

Haven't heard of 6'10 Joakim Noah of New York, NY?....well you have now.  Noah is the son of former tennis star Yannick Noah, and he was perhaps the top overall player in camp this week.....Don't be fooled by this athletic and skilled center's baby face....He's relentless on the boards and led the camp in blocked shots at 4 per game...He also led the camp in rebounding with 10.4 per game and averaged 14 points.....Noah finsihed camp as the highest rated prospect.......

6'9 Hatila DeSouza is an athletic power forward from Lauinburg, NC....DeSouza impressed all week with his rebounding, athleticism and desire to challenge shots in the lane.....DeSouza is an excellent prospect and a name to remember throughout the rest of the summer......

6'0 Sebastian Telfair dazzled all week with his passing and ball handling ability...He won the head to head matchup with Darius Washington and led the camp in assists with more than 7 per game.....Nearly every scouts and coach we talked with this week think he needs to attend college...most believe he will.....Louisville appears the heavy favorite for his services.....

6'11 Andray Blache was an intriguing prospect all week....he's an athletic shot blocker with some skills and he's heading to prep school next season.....He looks the part and could be a big time prospect next season.....

The top three freshman at ABCD were 6'6 Taylor King of Los Angeles, 6'3 OJ Mayo of Cincinnati and 6'2 Nolan Smith of Mitchellville, MD....King has superstar written all over him, Mayo was hyped to the hilt but Smith has perhaps the greatest potential and biggest upside of the three.....signing any two of those three in 2007 would be a big coup....Don't bet against Mayo and Smith wearing a UofL uniform down the road......

6'7, 270 James Tchana, a junior power forward and teammate of Tello Palacios at OSNA, is an excellent prospect in his own right....Tchana is strong on the boards and has some offensive ability....

Word around camp late this week that UNC isn't the lock most think for 6'9 Brian Johnson of Virginia...apparently the Cards have developed a strong relationship and this recruitment could get interesting the rest of month.....
