6'6 Wade provides insurance to pursue Telfair

EXCLUSIVE RECRUITING ANALYSIS -- ITV explains Lorenzo Wade's commitment and provides a road map to this recruiting classes final destination.

Lorenzo Wade provides insurance to pursue Telfair

With two commitments in the fold from 6'10 Terrance Farley and 6'7 Donta Smith, conventional wisdom assumed Coach Pitino and crew would round out the class of 2004 with a point guard and two post players.

Most looked in the direction of Sebastian Telfair or Rajon Rondo to fill the need at the point and two of Mohamed Tangara, Brian Johnson, David Burgess, Tello Palacios or Aaron Agnew to complete the five man class.

However, the unconventional Pitino seemingly threw us a changeup by accepting a verbal commitment from 6'6 Lorenzo Wade of Las Vegas, NV. Be assured, Wade is a talented player. However, his commitment was somewhat surprising given the fact that Wade cancelled a scheduled official visit in June after Donta Smith announced his commitment to the Cards. Couple that with statements made by Pitino and Assistant Coach Kevin Willard last week to ITV that the Cards would sign a point and two big men and the sudden change in direction for this recruiting class caught most off guard.

So why the need to change course and accept a verbal commitment now from a player like Lorenzo Wade? The answer appears simple: Insurance.

As we suspected when Lorenzo Wade's decision was made public Monday afternoon, his commitment is viewed as insurance for 6'0 Sebastian Telfiar.

Pitino's top target (ITV)
As we understand the strategy, the Cards are pursuing Telfair with full force at this time. Last week at the adidas ABCD Camp in Teaneck, NJ, Coach Pitino and Coach Willard were front and center for every game Sebastian played and Pitino brought reinforcements on Thursday with his son, neices and nephews all clad in red to watch the flashy New York point guard in action.

From all indication, the Cards are heavy favorites to land Telfair and Wade's commitment yesterday signifies the Louisville coaching staff will pursue Sebastian with full intent on signing the superstar point guard.

At this point, the plan to round out this recruiting class appears crystal clear...add Telfair and land a big man with the remaining two scholarships.

If for some reason Sebastian slips through the cracks (most likely to the NBA), the Cards now have the versatile Wade as insurance at the point and would likely sign two interior targets.

Passed over? (ITV)
With yesterday's development, it appears certain 6'2 Rajon Rondo is now out of the picture for the Cards and no longer a part of this coaching staffs plans.

As for the interior prospects, Coaches Willard and Taylor have been at the Nike Peach Jam in Augusta since yesterday trailing 6'9 Brian Johnson and perhaps 6'8 Kalen Grimes. However, most think Johnson is a lock for UNC.

Emerging target? (ITV)
6'9 Mohamed Tangara remains front and center and has recently reiterated that the Cards are his top choice ahead of schools like Memphis, Arizona and Michigan. 6'10 David Burgess could be emerging as a prime target for this coaching staff. Apparently, Burgess' parents are enamored with Coach Pitino and would love to see their son play for the future Hall of Fame coach. 6'7 Tello Palacios, who hasn't played at all on the summer circuit, is the forgotten man of this recruiting class but could enter the picture. Then guys like 6'10 Aaron Agnew, who lists the Cards as his favorite, could come into play later down the road should the Cards not capitalize on any of the above big men.

As you know though, things constantly change with this coaching staff as far as recruiting is concerned, and this plan could completely change tomorrow. Until then, we'll stand by this strategy.
