Louisville one of 16 undefeated teams left

The University of Louisville football team enjoyed an open week by moving up one spot in the Associated Press polls. The Cardinals are 5-0 and one of just 16 teams in the country still undefeated on the season.

Heading into the second week of October, there are only 16 FBS college football teams undefeated on the season.

And one of those is the University of Louisville.

The Cardinals are 5-0 and had the week off after edging Southern Mississippi last weekend. U of L moved up one spot into No. 18 in the new Associated Press poll.

"It's always good to have a good strong start, drawing praise from around the country and praise from everyone," U of L coach Charlie Strong said. "Being 5-0 speaks volumes about the way we have been able to maintain focus.

"I know some games we didn't finish like we wanted to finish. But this is a fun group of guys to be around and they just keep on battling."

Veteran center Mario Benavides said the Cardinals still "have a long way" to go but everybody is happy with the 5-0 mark.

"A year ago, some of those close games we probably would have lost because of the maturity and overall football game," Benavides said. "Now our mindset is different. We have the mindset now that we feel like we can win."

The Cardinals will begin preparations for Pittsburgh, which will be an 11 a.m. kickoff on the road next Saturday.

It will mark the first Big East Conference game for the Cardinals.

"We still haven't played our best ball yet, but we are 5-0 and have to keep building off of this and get better," safety Calvin Pryor said.

Added offensive coordinator Shawn Watson: "Just to be 5-0 is awesome. It's great and we know we still have work to do."
