No. 1 women's player Russell in town on visit

The University of Louisville women's basketball recruiting weekend includes the No. 1 player in the nation. Mercedes Russell will pick between U of L and Tennessee at some point in the next few weeks.

University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz is hosting four prospects this weekend, including the No. 1 player in the country.

Springfield, Ore., star Mercedes Russell made the trip to Louisville on Thursday night and began her official visit on Friday with the Cardinals.

The 6-foot-6 Russell visited Tennessee last week and is expected to make a decision between the Lady Vols and U of L sometime before the Nov. 14 signing day.

Russell is the elite prospect in the Class of 2013 nationally and has been ranked among the top of her class for several years.

The Cardinals have been in the race for Russell for a long time with assistant coach Stephanie Norman having a connection from the Oregon area.

Walz and Norman have spent a lot of hours back and forth to watch and visit with Russell, who plays for Team Concept AAU club.

The Cardinals had at least one coach at every game Russell played this summer and three coaches at several games towards the end of the summer season.

Russell would be the biggest recruit the Cardinals ever landed in women's basketball. Angel McCoughtry is the only first-team All-American the program has ever produced and she was only a top-50 prospect out of high school.

Cardinal Authority will have any news from the visits this weekend.
