Walz nabs top-50 commit; waits on others

University of Louisville women's coach Jeff Walz has reeled in one of the four prospects that visited campus last weekend. The Cardinals now have two commitments in the Class of 2013 and are hoping for more.

University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz hosted a monster recruiting weekend, giving his pitch to four top prospect last weekend.

On Monday, Walz got some good news out of the group.

Edwardsville, Ill., guard Emmonie Henderson was the first of the four to make a verbal commitment and she told Walz she was coming to Louisville. Henderson picked U of L over Tennessee and will sign next month.

""She felt really comfortable with coach (Jeff) Walz," her mentor and former AAU coach Roy Miller said. "The relationship she has with him was what it came down to in the end. Plus, it was a little closer (than Tennessee). She's really excited."

Miller said Henderson was impressed by Walz and his staff on the visit, noting she had some fans calling her name at the football game.

"She just really liked it a lot," Miller said. "A lot of schools were saying she could play the three and the four, she liked how he used his three's in his offense. She's versatile and she liked how he said he wanted to use her."

Also a track star, Henderson is a two-time first-team All-State selection in basketball. She averaged 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds a game and helped her team to the Class 4-A state title game as a junior. She set a 4-A record for rebounds in a state tournament game with 20 in the semifinals.

Henderson also holds the state record in the shot put and is a standout discus thrower also. She won the state title in both last year and is ranked at No. 2 among those throwing the shot put in high school nationally.

Ranked No. 40 in the Class of 2013 by ESPN.com, Henderson could be the start of a special 24-hour period for U of L women's basketball.

The No. 1 player in the country – Mercedes Russell – was also visiting last weekend and is down to U of L and Tennessee. She will make her decision public on Tuesday afternoon. She's from Springfield, Ore.

Beaverton, Ore., guard Alexis Montgomery, who is a close friend of Russell, is expected to make her college announcement before Russell on Tuesday. She's considering U of L, Virginia Tech, Hawaii and Seattle.

Another Oregon guard – Jordan Reynolds – also visited U of L last weekend and is expected to make a decision sometime before signing day.

U of L already has a commitment from junior-college point guard Janelle Cannon, who is considered one of the top five JUCO players in the country.
