U of L football breaks for holidays

The University of Louisville football team has a date with the Florida Gators in the Jan. 2 Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. But before the Cardinals head for the Big Easy, the team is getting a break for the Christmas holidays.

The University of Louisville football team is headed home for the holidays, finishing practice for the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Friday morning.

U of L head coach Charlie Strong said the players were able to leave for home and would return to Louisville on Dec. 26. The team will depart for New Orleans and the Jan. 2 game against Florida on Dec. 27.

"It's great they get a chance to go home," Strong said. "I was talking to them about how blessed and lucky they are to put themselves in this position to go home for a few days and have Christmas with your parents.

"When we come back, we'll get ready for Florida."

The Cardinals (10-2) practiced two times before taking a break for finals and then went for nine straight days of practice, using some of the time to get young guys reps and then putting in the game plan for the Gators.

U of L will take two planes to the Big Easy and then will practice five times in New Orleans before the game at the Superdome.

"We come back on Dec. 26," Strong said. "I wanted to give these guys some time to get home and get some rest. They have been practicing very hard. I've been very pleased with how they have been practicing. I'm very happy with the position we are in going to a BCS bowl game."
