CARDS MOVE UP A SPOT IN AP POLL
The University of Louisville basketball team moved up a spot into the No. 3 ranking in the latest Associated Press college basketball top 25 poll.
The Cardinals (13-1) jumped Arizona into the third spot, behind Duke and Michigan, in the new AP poll.
U of L remained in the No. 4 spot in the coaches poll, behind Duke, Michigan and Arizona – all three of which are undefeated.
The Cardinals beats Providence in the Big East Conference opener last week and will play at Seton Hall on Wednesday and home against South Florida this week.
CARDS UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Cardinals take a nine-game winning streak into Wednesday's game at Seton Hall and then will host South Florida on Saturday.
The next two games will also be tough, including a Jan. 14 game at Connecticut and a home game on Jan. 19 against Syracuse.
U of L will then play at Villanova and Georgetown the following week before a quick turnaround with a Jan. 28 game at home against Pittsburgh.
SIVA THE HORSE TO MAKE DEBUT
Rick Pitino's horse named Siva – after point guard Peyton Siva – will make his debut on Thursday in a race at Gulfstream Park.
Siva, who has worked several times in the past two weeks at Gulfstream, will compete in the seventh race of the day at Gulfstream.
The horse is trained by Dale Romans and will be ridden by David Cohen in the field of 10 horses in the race.
COOLEY GIVES CARDS HIGH PRAISE
Providence coach Ed Cooley gave the Cardinals some high praise last week after they beat the Friars in the conference opener.
Cooley called the Cardinals the "best team in the country."
"I've scouted every game that they have played this year and they have a lot of different answers, a lot of experience," Cooley said. "They play a great style. Our team, this is the first time that this group has played together all year, including in practice. So we're just not there yet. I think, without question, that Louisville is the best team in the country. They have a lot of different weapons. They play at a great pace. They use their depth. It seems like their player know their roles. They were fun to watch even to scout."
CARDS HAVE HIGH ACADEMIC MARK
The U of L basketball team excelled in the classroom also during the first semester of this year, earning a collective 3.41 grade point average.
In all, 15 of the 17 student-athletes on the roster achieved a 3.0 or better during the semester. Both are records for the men's basketball program.
The team produced a combined 3.16 GPA for the 2011 fall semester and had a 3.13 GPA for the 2012 spring semester. A dozen Cardinals have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better.
