U of L football recruiting notebook

The University of Louisville football team has 13 verbal commitments for the Class of 2013 but the coaching staff isn't finished with the class. Here are a few updates heading into the final four weekends before national signing day.

New Orleans O. Perry Walker standouts Lyn Clark and Corey Smith – both currently committed to Tulane – have picked up offers from Louisville.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Clark, who is an outside linebacker coming off shoulder surgery, is scheduled to make his official visit to Tulane on Jan. 18. He also has landed recent offers from Kentucky and Louisiana Tech.

A two-star prospect, Clark didn't divulge any other future visit plans to Scout.com.

The 6-7, 245-pound Smith is a defensive end and is also slated to make a visit to Tulane on the Jan. 18 weekend. A three-star prospect, Smith is also expect to make a visit to Arizona State and Kentucky.

U of L running backs coach Kenny Carter offered the pair.

Terry, Miss., athlete Ja'rius Moore was scheduled to make a visit this weekend to Louisville but said Thursday night the plans hadn't been firmed up.

"I don't know right now," Moore said. "I might come on the (Jan.) 18th when everyone else is coming. I'm supposed to talk to (the staff) on Friday."

The 6-foot, 190-pound Moore holds and offer from U of L and said the other two schools showing the most interest are Mississippi and Mississippi State.

U of L is recruiting Moore as a cornerback.

With the commitment of 2014 quarterback Reggie Bonnafon, the question has come up about the U of L recruitment of Conner quarterback Drew Barker.

Barker is considered the top quarterback prospect in the '14 class in Kentucky and has been high on U of L, making several visits to the school.

Barker said he hasn't talked with the staff since the Bonnafon commitment but would check in soon with coach Charlie Strong and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, noting "I'm pretty sure they planned on taking only one quarterback."

Cardinal Authority will keep you posted on Barker's talks with U of L.

The staff will host a monster recruiting weekend on Jan. 18, including several key targets and several current commitments.

Among the commitments expected to visit that weekend will be Lexington Catholic quarterback Kyle Bolin, Keith Towbridge, Derrick Calloway, Terrence Ross and Skylar Lacy.

Cardinal Authority will have the latest on the prospects visiting when the plans become official early next week.

A new name in the '13 the staff has checked in on this week is Suwanee, Ga., Collins Hill defensive end Chris Palmer.

The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Palmer only has offers from Navy and North Carolina Central but has picked up a ton of interest in recent weeks.

Palmer is likely a backup plan for the Cardinals but the staff has checked in along with Mississippi State and South Alabama this week.

As the '13 class winds down, the U of L staff has started to also send out scholarship offers to the next wave of prospects in the '14 class.

The Cardinals have offered Jacksonville, Fla., Trinity Christian wide receiver Isaiah Ford. He's a 6-foot-2, 165-pound prospect and also has offers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

St. John's Prep running back Johnathan Thomas doesn't hold an offer yet but has been hearing from the Cardinals. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Thomas already has offers from Boston College, Virginia and Pittsburgh.

The Cardinals are also showing interest in junior linebacker Cayson Collins of Charlotte, N.C., Phillip O. Berry. He is a former teammate of current U of L freshman linebacker Nick Dawson.
