Bria Smith sparks U of L women to win

University of Louisville sophomore guard Bria Smith celebrated her birthday a day late with a career-high 21 points as the Cardinals tagged DePaul with an 81-55 loss on Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals are now 21-5 on the season and 9-3 in Big East Conference play.

On Saturday, University of Louisville sophomore point guard Bria Smith turned 20 and she celebrated on Sunday with a career-high 21 points.

Smith hit 4 of 6 from the field and 13 of 15 from the free-throw line and added seven rebounds and two assists to lift the Cardinals (21-5, 9-3).

Sara Hammond added 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Sherrone Vails added 10 points and Shoni Schimmel had eight points and seven assists.

The Cardinals won in the Pink Out despite 1 of 17 from three-point range but still managed to reverse a loss to DePaul – 86-80 – on Jan. 5.

U of L hit 22 of 28 from the line and outrebounded the Blue Demons (18-8, 7-5) 49-43 and held them to 24.6 percent from the field.

The win puts the Cardinals in sole possession of fourth place in the conference, just a half-game behind Syracuse (21-3, 9-2) in the standings. The Cardinals will host South Florida on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
