Top in-state prospect talking walk-on?

Madison Central High School senior guard Dominique Hawkins is one of the elite players in the state of Kentucky and has several college scholarship offers. Would Hawkins consider walking on at the University of Louisville? Cardinal Authority talked to the talented guard about his decision.

Dominique Hawkins has full scholarship offers from Western Kentucky University and Morehead State University.

The 6-foot-1 guard from Madison Central High School in Richmond, Ky., is considered one of the top Class of 2013 prospects in the Bluegrass State and is a leading contender for the state's Mr. basketball honor.

Hawkins has some other schools – Tennessee and Alabama – who have inquired. Now, he said he has another option to think about.

A recent phone conversation with University of Louisville coach Rick Pitino landed Hawkins an opportunity to walk-on with the Cardinals. He said Pitino told him the opportunity for a scholarship could be there eventually.

"It's pretty crazy to think about," Hawkins said. "It's something I have to look at. I would rather a full scholarship right away, but I have to look at it.

"To think I could go to Louisville and play there, I'm just excited they're even talking to me. So it's something I have to see about."

Hawkins said at this point, Western Kentucky and Morehead are "definitely my top two" but noted there's a chance he could make a visit to U of L this Saturday when the Cardinals play host to Seton Hall.

"If we're not playing, I am going to try and come up," he said. "I think I will know more once I am there and talk to the coaches."

Hawkins averages 20.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game for the Indians (23-5). He's hitting 39 percent from three-point range.

U of L has signed four players, including three guards, in the Class of 2013. North Oldham sharpshooter David Levitch is also set to walk-on at U of L next season.
